The Unexplored Paradise of Brazil

When taking a holiday in Brazil most people go to places that we all know well. Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana beach, the Statue of Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf mountain to name but a few. But is that all that Brazil has to offer?

The simple answer to that question is no.

There are many places in Brazil that are generally only known by the locals. Special places that the average tourist doesn’t know about and wouldn’t find if they wanted to. Well worry not, thanks to our country manager for Latin America, Spain and Portugal, Daniel, we can proudly bring you a list of places that you would be a fool to miss out on. Read on to find out how to see a side of Brazil that anyone would call paradise.

Canyon do Poty

Naturally occurring and formed through geological fault millions of years ago, the Poty River is something that everyone should experience. Starting in Ceará, the river diverts through the geological rift when it reaches Buriti dos Montes, crosses the Ibiapaba Mountain and flows into the Parnaiba River, in Poti village. There is a whole world of natural caves and shelters. From the city centre, the easiest access is by car, take a 4×4 if possible.

Well of the Emerald in the Vargem Grande Complex

If you have ever dreamed of various natural beauties, all gathered in one place, you have to visit this complex, which is actually on private property. But that does not stop you from exploring waterfalls, wells, swimming pools (natural ones), just a little bit of everything. 8 km from the centre of Carrancas, after a light and slippery trail, you are faced with one of the main shows in the region. The Esmeralda Waterfall, totally surrounded by vegetation, is a shy but beautiful waterfall, capable of providing a relaxing massage for those of you that dare to try. It all flows into the Emerald Well, which reaches depths of up to five meters in some places. It gets its name from the emerald green water that is more prevalent when the sun is shining, especially around noon.

Cachoeira El Dorado

The adventure in the Amazon means to explore what is little known to the outside world. The Waterfall El Dorado is located in Rio Igarapé, a canyon, formed in the southwest Mount Tantalita. The challenge is to reach the mountains and waterfalls that you have only ever imagined. Boasting the largest free fall in Brazil of 350 meters, which is equivalent to a 126-story building, makes for an awe-inspiring sight once you reach it. The paths through the Amazon Rainforest are difficult to access and you need to make sure you are prepared with the right kind of gear, including machetes! My advice, get a local guide to take you. It is not the kind of place you want to get lost in, but definitely worth the hassle.

Peninsula of Maraú

Get ready to get lost in the Bahian visual paradise in the Peninsula of Maraú. Here you will find beaches, islands, waterfalls, lagoons, belvederes, trails and a sunset never to be forgotten. With 40 km beaches that are practically deserted all year round, with fine white sand, coconut trees lining the coastline with forest and mangroves thrown in for good measure. The Peninsula of Maraú is perfect for divers of all levels. At low tide, you will find natural pools along the coast that catch in them all sorts of species of fish that can be seen with ease in the crystal clear waters.

Covão Waterfall

From December to June, Piauí experiences a rainy period and has a characteristic that has given it the name of ‘Paradise of the waterfalls’. The main one, the Covão Waterfall, is a waterfall between rocks that forms a pool you can only access using stairs. To get down there you need to go down a number of steps and you will find yourself in front of two waterfalls, each between 12 and 15 meters, give the impression that the waterfall is a great stairway through which the river flows. Take care though, the depth and the slippery floor make for a hazardous but fun-filled adventure.

Barra dos Remédios Beach

A deserted and paradisiacal beach. Is there anything better? Barra dos Remédios Beach is different from the rest of the coast of Ceará because of the typical tide of the mangroves, the richness of the fauna, and the moving dunes that take the shape of a cone and end up marked as the highest in the state. A simple place that is made apparent by the village of fishermen and rural workers that make up some of the huge population of 130 inhabitants. You can get there a number of ways, over the dunes by buggy or 4×4 or through the water in a kayak or canoe. However you get to this little piece of paradise, you will not be disappointed.

Waterfall of Formiga

Extremely clear waters, sandy bottom and a pleasant temperature. The Formiga Waterfall is considered by many to be the most beautiful attraction in the Jalapão State Park. So good that it almost seems unreal. A movie set almost, set up by a perfect match of native forest fern, palm trees and the bluish water of the waterfall. One tip here, take a snorkel and mask to get the full potential from your visit.
