Today is the European Union Day, and we thought it is the perfect opportunity to say a little bit more about the administrative capital of the EU – Brussels!
Today’s Brussels history begins in the 50’s when the city was preparing to organize a world exhibition. It was then that the city’s wide avenues, office buildings, tunnels, and viaducts, as well as the famous Brussels Atomium, were built. From then on the city was being prepared for the reception of thousands of people. It was also then that the district of Léopold, which now houses most of the EU institutions, was rebuilt.
Brussels has already been chosen as the headquarters of the international organization – the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as early as 1949, before the EU. It was primarily geared to the geographical location of Belgium as a center for the area of operations of the organization and the proximity of NATO’s main military base in Mons near Brussels.
Today the city is home to most EU institutions, which means that the city has become a symbol of united Europe.
But Brussels is much more than just the buildings of European institutions. It’s a city with a long history and many beautiful sights.
Starting with the magnificent architecture of buildings such as Town Hall, Cathedral of Sts. Michael and St. Guduli, Guildhouses, the Notre Dame du Sablon and many more, through extraordinary museums such as the Museum of Instruments, the Train World, the Museum of Natural History or the Royal Museum of Military and Military History, to the magnificent parks such as Bois de la Cambre, Parc Du Cinquantenaire or Jardin du Petit Sablon Brussels enchants all of its visitors.
