The Best Christmas Markets & Festivities of 2021

Don’t forget to consult the guidelines of your destination if you’re travelling this holiday season and stay up to date with changes to scheduled events, as they are subject to change with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Book tickets ahead of time and, of course, stay safe.

December is here! You know what that means — it’s time to ignite that Holiday spirit. It’s a time for jam-packing your Winter 2021 plans with ice-skating, nut-cracking, tinsel-topping, light-twinkling joy in the form of Christmas markets and activities (the good stuff that a lot of us missed out on this time last year).

Luckily, there are tonnes of things to do in Europe over the holidays. From the best Christmas markets in Europe to Christmas lights experiences and activities, things are about to get pretty seasonal. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of the best cities in Europe for Christmas markets and festivities for 2021, to ensure your plans truly sparkle. So dig out your Mariah Carey shrine and let’s plan your trip.

The Top Christmas Markets in Europe for 2021

Berlin

The Advent market at Schlachtensee lake in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district is the perfect place to find seasonal cheer. Parents can sip on a hot cup of mulled wine from the local vintner (wine-grower), while children listen to tales from the storyteller and wait for Santa to visit. For a touch of magic, the Christmas Garden Berlin is the height of twinkling festivities; stroll around and explore the 10 gardens, immersing yourself into various different worlds of light.

London

Become enchanted by the world famous show The Nutcracker at The London Coliseum. With over 100 dancers and musicians, the show is bound to get you in the festive spirit. Explore the wizarding world of Hogwarts in the Snow at Warner Bros. Studio, running from the 12th of November until the 16th of January 2021. See your favourite London landmarks dressed in sparkling lights on the Christmas Lights London by Night bus tour. For a total deck-the-halls experience, complete with food, drink, live music, ice-skating, a circus, and not to mention their Christmas market, visit Winterwonderland at Hyde Park.

Pro-tip: Other great Christmas markets in the UK include the Edinburgh Christmas market and Belfast Christmas market. We highly recommend them.

Paris

Featuring a medley of aerial silk dancers, musicians, tap dancers and more, Christmas Festival du Merveilleux is a must-see festive garden experience at Musée des Arts Forains. Unsurprisingly, Disneyland transforms itself at Christmas, bringing touches of seasonal enchantment to it’s already very magical experience — who knows, you may even bump into Olaf (the cute little snowman from Frozen).

Warsaw

Watch the synchronized musical Christmas light show on Ridge Valley to get yourself in the holiday spirit. Guzzle a hot cup of glühwein, roam around the shopping stalls, and go ice-skating at the Warsaw Christmas market. Over the winter, the Royal Garden of Light in Wilanów transforms into a fairy-tale told with lights. It’s a winter must-see for anybody visiting the city in search of that “feeling”.

Pro-tip: Another fantastic seasonal market in Poland is the Krakow Christmas market, said to be one of the best in Europe.

Amsterdam

Celebrate the 10th year of Amsterdam Light Festival — watch the city turn into a work of twinkling, sparkling art. Explore the Christmas markets and take a whirl on the ice-rink. Enjoy the World Christmas Circus, a Dutch tradition, featuring performers from around the world, including Russian trapeze artists, French ventriloquists, and Chinese unicyclists.

Brussels

The magical lights of the Great North, the beautiful grand Palace, and the treasures from the adorable stalls make the atmosphere oh-so seasonal at Brussels Christmas market. Explore Bruge on a day trip, where they have incredible markets and hearty cuisine to comfort from the chill outside. Watch the ‘Winter Wonders’ Inauguration Parade to witness some of the most spectacular light displays and floats, chock full of Christmas cheer.

Frankfurt

The Frankfurt Christmas market is an unmissable Christmas event; from the giant Christmas tree to the carol singing and it’s setting in the Old Town centre, it’s certain to induce holiday vibes. We hear the view at the Dom Church is utterly miraculous.
