Travel Apps you Need to Download

Travelling can be tricky, so finding the right tools to help you out is crucial. We are lucky enough to live in the time when we can have them all in our pocket. Smartphones have become the modern day Swiss Army knives and it would be silly not to use them. Today we present to you some of the most useful travel apps.

Preparing for the Trip

The perfect tool for those who never know what to pack or tend to pack more items than they really need is Packpoint. This app asks you for your gender, the place you are going to, a number of days you’ll spend there and the activities you are planning on doing. Then it creates a customised list of items you need to pack. Not only is it perfect for preventing you from forgetting something, but it is also a great time-saver.

At The Airport

A great community-based app that we already mentioned on our blog is Stopover. It is perfect for all those long layovers ahead. It lets you choose between Airport Dating, learning a language, meeting other travellers or even expanding your business network. All you have to do is create a profile and enjoy its benefits.

Another app we have already mentioned is Flystay. It helps you plan the time between your flights to make it as enjoyable as possible by tailoring its recommendations for you. The app suggests the best available activities as well as airport amenities you can use during your stay. They also partner with airports to offer their users interesting promotions and help you contact other people. It is a great way to use your time effectively and not get annoyed with the wait.

The Perfect Guides

Like a Local Guide

While it is a website, not an app, it is so useful that we had to include it on our list. Like a Local Guide is perfect for finding all the hidden spots loved by the locals. You can join the community of the travel lovers and write down all your favourite spots in your city. And later on, you can use other people’s tips to find the gems wherever you travel to.

Time Out

Time Out is the perfect guide. It may not cover many cities, with less than 40 in the system so far, however, the database is constantly growing and the cities included are described very precisely. It helps you find the best restaurants, cinemas, theatres, events, and activities. And after you choose what you want to do and which places you want to visit it helps you create a plan for your trip. Truly useful tool.

Similarly to TimeOut, AroundMe identifies your position and shows you the nearest bars, restaurants, and cinemas. However, it also points to the gas stations, supermarkets, and even hospitals. Very useful app for finding both nice places to see as well as useful spots on the city map.

Getting Around

If you know where you want to go but don’t know how to get there, or if you are looking for the best connections between your destinations, the Rome2Rio app will help you figure it all out. Not only does it let you know which means of transport can you and which do you have to take, but also how long the whole trip will be.

You probably already know this one but we’ve decided to include Uber on our list anyway. It prevents you from getting ripped off if you do not know the prices in the city you’re visiting. You can track your drivers, see their reviews, choose between regular and premium cars and most importantly, you pay by card. This way you don’t have to carry cash and can feel a lot safer when getting around a foreign city.

While Rome2Rio helps you travel between towns, Citymapper is the go-to app for getting around the city. If you don’t want to spend money on uber, you can save a few bucks by using the public transport, or even a bike. It shows you the best bus, subway, train, ferry, taxi, and bike routes as well as the walking trails.

Not an app, but a very useful website. CityStasher allows you to search for the perfect place to leave your luggage. You can choose from a variety of local stores and hotels with extra storage space for as little as £4. You also get up to £750 insurance. A great deal that leaves you bags-free, so you can enjoy your day without the burden.

Planning Ahead

If you’re going on a business trip you may want to keep your expenses in check. Expensify is one of the best travel apps for expense report management. It helps you track all your receipts during the trip. All you have to do is take a picture of the receipt and the app will do the rest. It is also great if you have a limited amount of money and don’t want to exceed your budget during your regular travels.

SAS Survival Guide

While we hope you’ll never need this guide, it may be a good idea to get one for yourself. First created as a book, now also in an app form. It gives you clues and guidelines for surviving any situation. The app includes the entire book as well as 16 videos, photo gallery of knots, edible plants etc., morse code signaling device, quizzes, sun compass and more. It may be useful if you’re wandering into the wild.

Weather can be the crucial factor when travelling. Knowing the forecasts may prevent you from getting soaked, help you pick an outfit and most importantly the activities. AccuWeather is great for getting the most accurate (hence the name) weather forecasts for any location. The app works in over 100 languages and is one of the best sources for weather-related information in the World.

The perfect app for when you want to contact your friends and family at home is Rebtel. It automatically finds the best phone lines you can connect your calls through. This way you can be sure you are not wasting money on unnecessary connections. Perfect for all the frequent travellers who like to stay in touch with their loved ones.

XE Currency

When travelling abroad, we usually pay with foreign currencies. That can get very confusing and make us spend more than we intended. That’s when XE Currency app comes in handy. It provides live exchange rates and charts as well as a currency converter. It can even track the currencies that interest you the most.

When you travel, you often have to use the internet. Either for finding the place you wanted to see, contacting other people or simply for the entertainment. But using many different Wi-Fi networks may be dangerous. TunnelBear is perfect to prevent anybody from tracking your phone. It is also a great tool to help you unlock your favourite websites if the country you’re visiting is blocking them. It allows you to continue using the internet safely.

Wiffinity gives you a free access to Wi-Fi locations worldwide. They’ve created a community of travellers who on the Wi-Fi map share the passwords to the hotspots they’ve found. It already has over 600 000 hotspots in its database and is constantly growing. A great advantage is that you don’t need to register or give any of your personal details away when using the app.

Prey Anti Theft

One thing we all dread during travels is losing our phone or even worse, having it stolen. Prey Anti Theft is a must-have tool for any traveller. Not only is it a recovery tool that helps you find your phone, but also its missing device reports serve as the evidence for the police. It gives you detailed information on the GPS coordinates, Wi-Fi neighbourhoods and even pictures or the thief! Truly useful in case of such scary situation.

Language and Souvenirs

If you’re going to a foreign country, likely, you don’t know the language spoken there. That’s where Duolingo comes in handy. This app helps you learn a language of your choice with easy tasks and games. It is great for the beginners and can help you out during your travels.

Have you ever felt, like none of the postcards you could choose from weren’t pretty enough or fun enough? TouchNote helps you turn your own photos into postcards and send them to the people you love. The team that works 24/7 is ready to transform your snaps into cards perfect for any occasion. They print out your postcards and send them to your loved ones. You can choose between various designs as well as card types and create a truly thoughtful gift.

So grab your phone, download those travel apps and never fear any trip ever again.
